In 1946 Weill was commissioned to write an opera for the
University of Indiana. He expanded and simplified a short opera
he had written for the radio, "Down in the Valley", which was
then premiered in Bloomington in 1948. This one-act opera,
which incorporates melodies based on familiar American folk
songs, grew out of Weill's fascination with American folk
material. He and his librettist Arnold Sundgaard created the
work specifically to fall within the technical compass of
university and amateur groups. In the words of the New York
Times, "it offers a fascinating glimpse into Weill's American
period and the sort of folkish Americana that so influenced the
'serious' musical world in this country during the 1930's and
40's."
