This comic opera Dove e amore e gelosia (Giuseppe Scarlatti) is not much but
froth, and the title tells you all you need to know about the plot. It was
commissioned by a noble Schwarzenberg prince for an aristocratic wedding that
took place in his family seat, Cesky Krumlov, in 1768. (By the way a modern day
Schwarzenberg can be glimpsed here taking his seat in a box: he is the current
Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs.)
The castle theater in Cesky Krumlov has preserved a collection of baroque
theater manuscripts, machines, sets and costumes that is unequalled in the world
(in many ways not even by Drottningholm in Sweden), and this production filmed
this year for Czech Television makes a special effort to show off the theater's
sets and machines, just as the premiere in 1768 must have done. The singers
then were talented amateurs, Counts and Princesses. In the modern version, you
see some of today's best Czech singers. This must really be very close to what
opera looked like in the 18th century.
Very good picture.
